Web 2.0 – the rise of the Internet
May 9th, 2007
Web 2.0? If you don’t know what that means it’s ok you’re not the only one. Web 2.0 is simply a buzzword made popular by Tim O’Reilly of O’Reilly publishing which refers to a new generation of community based websites. Community based websites include social networking sites like Myspace and Digg, or the ever popular Wikipedia.

Ironically one of the best places for information about web 2.0 is on a web 2.0 site. Wikipedia shows some characteristics for a web 2.0 site
- “Network as platform” — delivering (and allowing users to use) applications entirely through a browser.[7] See also Web operating system.
- Users owning the data on the site and exercising control over that data.[8][7]
- An architecture of participation and democracy that encourages users to add value to the application as they use it.[7][1] This stands in sharp contrast to hierarchical access-control in applications, in which systems categorize users into roles with varying levels of functionality.
- A rich, interactive, user-friendly interface based on Ajax[7][1] or similar frameworks.
- Some social-networking aspects.[8][7]
- Enhanced graphical interfaces such as gradients and rounded corners (absent in the so-called Web 1.0 era).
The popular site Seomoz.org has recently published their second edition of the “web 2.0 awards” which cite the best community websites by category. Some of the winners are:
Blog Guides
Book marking
Business
Classifieds & Directories
Feed Management
Fun Stuff
Marketing
Mobile
Music
Mingle 2
According to “The national Research Council” the online pornography industry was worth 1 billion dollars in 2002 but recent data shows those figure are beginning to dwindle as social networking websites are set to take over any day now. They also note that sex is the first use of technology before it’s mainstream adoption (ex. video cassettes, tapes). A step such as this shows the mainstreams acceptance of internet as a medium and a communications tool. Finally this change shows respect: for the user, the community and other users.

Those are some cool web 2.0 sites I hadn’t seen yet. Seomoz did such a great job on the first and second web 2.0 awards I keep thinking it must’ve taken them forever to compile that list.

[...] Social media optimization is all the rage in the SEO world. Social networking and media sites are a very useful tool for the average SEO specialist. Social websites allow you to build back links, create and encourage your website popularity and bring in tons of new traffic. In fact if performed well one could probably make their website based upon link bait alone. Some of the more notable websites like Digg, News vine and Reddit have been used since their inception. And with tons of new social sites popping up, there is not shortage of un-gamed websites. Digg amongst other website has become difficult to manipulate. While the website as a whole is manipulated by the Digg mafia, regular users would have to spend limitless amounts of time in order to land a first page story on Digg. In many ways the traffic is not worth the effort. [...]
